Salmon Scotland: backs Shetland tunnel proposals
Salmon Scotland has welcomed plans to develop a network of undersea tunnels linking Shetland’s islands, saying the infrastructure would improve transport for the aquaculture sector and support future investment.
Shetland Islands Council has approved work to develop proposals for fixed links between the Shetland Mainland and Yell and Unst, with additional tunnel connections to Whalsay and Bressay also under consideration.
The industry body said the proposed tunnels would improve transport for workers, suppliers, equipment and exports of Scottish salmon.
“We strongly support the development of tunnels serving Unst and Yell,” said Tavish Scott, chief executive of Salmon Scotland.
“As the major private sector employer in many of these island communities, we know just how important better connections would be. Stronger connections would support jobs, investment and future growth across Shetland.”
According to Salmon Scotland, salmon farming contributes £91 million annually to Shetland’s economy and supports around 1,000 jobs across the islands, including 390 directly in farming and processing. The organisation said improved transport infrastructure would strengthen the sector’s supply chain and improve access to markets.
The council has not yet approved construction of the tunnels, with the latest decision allowing work to progress on developing the proposals.
